The morning wind gently stirs the ropes as the first rays of the morning sun hit the deck
Aft, skipper Ab has started the engine, calling to his mate to let go the moorings
And out of the harbour we go
Once outside, we set sail together,
The halyards are tied and the leeboard is lowered into the water
Moments later, the proud bow of the Nil Desperandum is pushing her way through the water,
driven by the wind
On the foredeck, knots are explained to interested listeners
The ship dog Joepie observes the goings on with an experienced eye...
Coffee is ready and enjoyed on deck
Time to chat the time away and to decide with the skipper where to go
We could stay the night in Makkum, or go through the locks straight away, into the salt water towards Terschelling
Maybe spend the night on a quiet sandbank?
Watching foraging birds and resting seals as the sun goes down?
That night, the port of call turns out to be the old fishing town of Harlingen
From the galley, calls to dinner are issued forth.
Sated, the evening starts on deck as skipper Ab gets out his guitar
To sing some of his favourite seaman-songs
The night is only just beginning!
